How do we add a new Tech-Prep class to our existing program?

Adding a new class falls into two categories: (1) Adding a course to an existing articulated concentration or (2) adding all or part of the classes in a concentration. There are twelve (12) career concentrations in which the 29 Tech-Prep courses align. Career concentrations have from one (1) to six (6) Tech-Prep courses in each. Concentrations and the number of courses in each are listed: Child Care (1), Drafting (3), Computers (5), computer networking (5), Criminal Justice (3), Electronics/ Instrumentation (3), Health Care Service (3), Office Systems Technology (2), and Welding (1). One course overlaps and is in both computers and computer networking.

Let us use the example of the computer concentration; there are 5 computer courses in this concentration. When a school articulates with Golden Crescent Tech-Prep and Victoria College in this concentration, they sign an agreement that allows them to teach all 5 computer courses.

Category 2 - the school wants to teach computers and has not articulated that program. We show the teacher and school's Tech-Prep coordinator and/or Point of Contact the requirements for each computer course. Requirements are outlined in the Competency form, if the information is cover and the school meets the Partnership/Articulation goals they need only to sign the articulation agreement to start the program.

Category 1 - the school is articulated and teaching only one computer course, they need only tell us they intend to teach one or more of the other articulated computer courses.

Can we give Tech-Prep credit to students if we start a new concentration or class after the school year has started?

The requirements for a school to have a Tech-Prep course are as follows:

a. The course must be articulated with Golden Crescent Tech-Prep

b. Most courses must be taught for the entire year, 180 hours.

c. The essential elements listed on the course competency form must be covered If all of these are met the school can give credit to students.

How do the students get credit at Victoria College?

The process of getting the Tech-Prep earned credit added to the students College transcript at Victoria College is one of the easiest in the Nation. This is because VC requires a student to successfully complete only one (1) three (3) semester hour course and pass all three (3) portions of the THEA to have all her/his Tech-Prep courses added to their transcript. The THEA requirement is only for non-THEA exempt programs. Most colleges in Texas require twelve (12) semester hours of local credit before Tech-Prep credit is added to the transcript. The requirements for getting this credit added to a transcript are outlined for the student in 3 places. (1)The Victoria College catalogue under Academic Regulations, Tech-Prep credit page 27. (2) On the back cover of the Tech-Prep pamphlet "Earn Free College Credit Now!" and (3) inside the Tech-Prep "On the Move" magazine.

Student procedures are listed below:

a. Pass all portions of a test approved for purposes or meet exemption requirements and have the results sent to Victoria College.

b. Complete and submit the Application for Admissions form to the VC Admissions and records office.

c. Have an official high school transcript forwarded to VC; it is the student's responsibility to ensure that her/his Tech-Prep course (s) are reflected on their transcript with the correct notation next to the appropriate Tech-Prep course.

d. Successfully complete a minimum of 3 hours of credit at VC. Remedial courses do not count.

e. Upon successful completion of the above requirements, students must fill out an application for Tech-Prep credit in the Admission & Records office to have the courses added to their academic transcript.

Are there specific requirements that the High School must follow:

The HIGH school agrees in the articulation agreement to teach the course for 1 year or 180 hours and cover all information on the competency form for that specific course. They also agree to register all students on the Golden Crescent Tech-Prep Electronic Enrollment System  known as CATEMA and submit a completed electronic competency form for each student. They must put the appropriate information on the student's transcript to indicate that the student has taken a Tech-Prep course.
